Early adopters
MEDfx Corporation is a privately-held company with a long history of embracing emerging technologies in collaboration with other innovative healthcare organizations. Over the course of its 25-year history, MEDfx Corporation has established itself as a leader in professional services, systems integration, and software engineering. More than 10,000 practices nationwide and millions of patient lives have benefited from the performance, reliability, and engineering excellence of the MEDfx Solution Stack.
MEDfx was originally formed to assist grant-funded federally qualified health centers (FQHCs) automate their organizations and build Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) connectivity solutions. In a six-year timeframe, the company became recognized as the national leader in providing health IT solutions to FQHC's, community health centers, and community mental health centers. MEDfx sold and supported more than one third of all FQHCs throughout the US and Virgin Islands, including the largest in the United States with over 500 concurrent users.
Building upon its successes, MEDfx entered into collaborative relationships with a number of national software development companies. The first substantial partnership was an engagement as a value-added reseller (VAR) for Sage. Over a ten-year period, MEDfx established itself as one of the largest Sage VARs servicing over 5,000 practices nationwide. The MEDfx customer footprint was increased by another 5,000 practices when the Company was awarded the exclusive contract for servicing all Sage customers using legacy products. MEDfx earned numerous awards for its nationwide sales and customer support services.
The birth of connectivity
By the mid-1990's MEDfx Corporation began to focus on standards-based connectivity. Development projects to allow connectivity in heterogeneous UNIX and PC environments for existing customers later exploded into worldwide Internet distribution of connectivity tools to over 100,000 customers in 30 countries. These connectivity solutions allow users to operate PCs and shared printers in a mixed operating system environment. Thousands of new customers continue to purchase these tools each year.
The Company became highly regarded for its expertise in UNIX/Linux operating systems and developed a national reputation for data recovery from catastrophic system failure including damaged and unreadable media. Clients included software vendors, health care organizations, legal and professional services firms, manufacturers, and federal agencies.
In 2002 the Company designed and engineered MEDfx, a Java enterprise, web-native, platform and database-independent interoperability framework, to support the vision of national healthcare data exchange. With the framework in place, the Company officially launched nationwide marketing of the MEDfx suite of products. MEDfx PM, a fully-featured practice management solution, was the first component to be engineered for the framework.
Amid the cloud
The Company then entered into a partnership agreement with a national HIE vendor to incorporate EMR functionality. This solution was the first joint application ever introduced for CCHIT certification in 2007. The MEDfx engineering and customer support teams were engaged to perform all aspects of the CCHIT certification process and to provide support services to the entire installed base of the CCHIT - certified solution.
In 2009 the Company formed Nationwide Health Information Technology, Inc. (NHIT), a consulting organization servicing NHIN and other NHIE opportunities. NHIT participated in the NHIN initiative by providing the engineering and architectural resources responsible for evaluation, selection, integration, and deployment of a production CONNECT NHIN gateway. The Company's knowledge of emerging standards and diverse health information systems provides customers with production-level connectivity solutions.
Within the MEDfx framework, the Company continues to provide integration of 'best of breed' application and technology tools, taking advantage to the extent possible of the use of open-source software, to deliver affordable, scalable results.
